Is taking a drop to prepare for IIT-JEE worth it?

When it comes to education, parents often lean on the state board exams, but this might not be the best time to lay down your laurels. With increasing demand and competition to get into top IIT-JEE colleges in India, joining an institute of your choice is just one avenue amongst many that you have available.

That said though, there are times when joining an institution of your choice can prove too strenuous for some students and may allow them more time for their actual education.

We’ve penned down a few reasons why you should think about dropping a year from your academic life, when you’re in class 12 to prepare for IIT-JEE examination.

We will be discussing the Pros & cons of taking a drop

What are the pros of taking a drop?

1. Dropping a year will allow you to catch up on the courses that you need the most – In case you feel like you’re doing poorly in one or two subjects and aren’t able to cope with the amount of pressure that’s on top of your head, dropping a year obviously allows you to have more time for revision. You’ll be able to spend more time on understanding the basics of each subject and this will ultimately help you score better in your board exams.

2. You can opt for a better college – If you are aiming for IIT, chances are you’ll be wanting to get into the better colleges. Doing a drop will allow you to choose between institutions that might not have the minimum cut offs that other colleges do. As of now, there’s no guarantee but we’ve seen some students reap the benefits of dropping a year by landing seats in good institutes.

What are the cons of taking a drop?

1. Finished with high school – If dropping is an option in your education, chances are that your high school life will be over as soon as you hit 12th grade. You might feel that you aren’t able to get into the college of your choice and this is when the pressure gets doubled.

2. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to get into a good college- Taking a drop also increases your risk of not getting into a good college, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to get yourself enrolled in one. If this is your first year in 12th grade and you’re aiming to join an institute of your choice, dropping a year might not be the best thing to do.
